Get to know some of the main cast and their characters in How To Ruin Love: The Proposal.

Sivenathi Mabuya is Zoleka
Zoleka has the perfect life but is very insecure about it. In her mind, everything that can go wrong will. She spends her life trying to avoid the worst from happening and doesn’t always realise that she is her own worst enemy.

Sive says, “She’s very much into making sure that everything goes perfectly and goes well and exactly the same. She values her relationships even though sometimes she sabotages herself. I found myself in that position at some point in my life as well but, like I said, she means well and I think I mean well most of the time whenever I do stuff but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m always on the right path, so those are the similarities, I guess. But I have learnt a lot of things when it comes to Zoleka like don’t be impulsive, don’t just act on it.”

Bohang Moeko is Kagiso Phatudi
Kagiso is a hardworking entrepreneur who has spent most of his life trying to make his dreams come true and do what he can for the love of his life, Zoleka, while still supporting his large and colourful family.

“I would say he is a guy that is after the right things. His heart is in the right place, his execution of doing the things he wants to do is not so great, hence all the stumbling, hence all the plans going left. But, also, he truly loves Zoleka, he loves his family. He struggles to set boundaries and that affects his relationship but he’s after the right things,” Bohang says.

Noxolo Dlamini is Amahle
Amahle has been Zoleka’s best friend since high school but they are total opposites. Where Zoleka is calculated and plans her life to a tee, Amahle doesn’t plan anything and is a carefree spirit at heart.

“I’d like to take away her carefreeness,” Noxolo laughs.

“I love how loyal she is to her friend through everything that we’ll end up seeing as the show goes on, but I’d like to take away this loyalty but also being okay with figuring yourself out. As an actress, I feel like I kind of want to have things in line, which is never or always the case and I think a lot of us are like that. But’s she’s more go with the flow, this is where I want to be now so this is where I’m going to go and I think that’s a bit of a light way of taking life and I like that about her.”Khutso, Kagiso’s mother, is the logical parent who bears the consequences of her husband’s big heart.

“She’s not to far off, in terms of my personality, to me. She’s very lighthearted, she’s funny. She’s the head of the family, she’s the sense of the family because everyone else is going chaotic in their own directions and I’m trying to centre everybody. But she’s got things hidden inside of her,” Marjorie chuckles. The head of the Phatudi family, Papi is the life and soul of his clan and his community. After taking his early retrenchment package, his mission has been to help all those he comes across – although is notoriously bad with the family’s finances.

“Everything that is being done on the surface, you’re seeing everything wrong. But right underneath there, the intentions are always good … But still, he’s got a problem of a little pride. He does not know how to communicate with the wife and stuff but the wife being the strong person, which is quite good.”Martin, Zoleka’s father, is a man of very few words but he can pack a verbal punch when he chooses to. He is a respected judge with conservative and culturally traditional values.

“It’s about money, you’ve got to have money. And he’s one of those guys that are actually quite strict. The total opposite of me, I chill with my kids and I let them do what they want to do.

“But he’s the kind of guy who, if we look at the backstory that no one knows of but there’s something that will be revealed in the later episodes and you’ll understand why he has this close relationship with his daughter, but not so close. I think his level of sensitivity is somewhere between zero and two.”Tina Jaxa is Liswa
Liswa is Martin’s younger sister but is like a big sister to Zoleka. Liswa is Zoleka’s biggest advocate and supports her in all things – including standing up to her big brother Martin.

Tina explains, “I think she’s true to herself. She also believes that … the heart wants what it wants and she’s big on that. Hence when you view the first episode you would see that I am always cheering for uZoleka to go after uKagiso and I don’t want to spoil much, but I think it’s one of the things I really relate to the character about. You have to go after what you want and need as well, which is generally what envelopes everything in the world which is love.”
