Zimbabweans have reacted with humor and excitement to news of South African music sensation DJ Tira’s upcoming performance in Bulawayo this weekend.
While fans are eagerly anticipating a night of gqom and Afro-pop magic, they couldn’t resist poking fun at the star’s past mishap – losing his passport during a previous visit to Zimbabwe, which left him stranded in the country longer than planned.
The award-winning DJ, whose real name is Mthokozisi Khathi, took to social media to announce his upcoming performance in Zimbabwe.
“Bulawayo Zimbabwe this Saturday…Mr Marufu is coming home with Q Twins,” DJ Tira posted on his Facebook page.
However, the announcement quickly became a source of hilarity as Zimbabweans flocked to the comments section with a warning: “DJ Tira, don’t lose your passport again!”
The DJ Tira Passport Saga Revisited
DJ Tira, set to perform alongside the popular Qwabe Twins, announced the show on social media, sparking a wave of warnings from trolls and fans.
“Please keep your passport safe this time,” joked @MbusoNdlovu, while another added, “We love you, but we don’t want to adopt you again!”
@Phillip Matika said: “This time please make sure that you put your valuable passport in a safe place. This time we don’t what any drama again Mr Marufu Aka Dj Tira. Remember Zimbabwe is home to everyone. Warm Welcome home Mr Marufu Dj Tira the Dubarn Finest and the beautiful Q twins.”
In July 2022, DJ Tira misplaced his passport while in Gwanda, Zimbabwe. The mishap led to an unplanned extended stay in the country, which, although disruptive, became a fondly remembered story among fans. He embraced the experience with humor at the time, even performing extra shows for Zimbabwean fans while awaiting the resolution of his predicament.
A Weekend of Gqom and Afro-Pop Magic
DJ Tira’s visit to Bulawayo isn’t just another performance – it’s part of the star-studded celebration of Sandra “Sandy” Ndebele’s birthday. The celebrated musician, actress, businesswoman and politician is hosting a glamorous event dubbed Denim on Pearls.
Sandra Ndebele spoke to The South African, confirming DJ Tira’s visit, saying: “It is my birthday celebration, and we decided that it is important to celebrate while we are still alive. The event is about embracing the inner you! Celebrate any achievement or disappointments as you set your goals forward and not stop doing what you want to do or achieve. I am also celebrating that I recently graduated on music business, musicology, and technology”
With her background in dance, Sandra expressed her love for gqom music, adding: “I love gqom music, which is why I invited DJ Tira and Q Twins.”
