Tyla wows in pinstripes at the 2025 Met Gala

South African star Tyla stole the spotlight at the 2025 Met Gala with a breathtaking Jacquemus gown. The gown perfectly captured the event’s theme, ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.’

Making her second Met Gala appearance, Tyla dazzled on the blue carpet in an immaculately tailored off-the-shoulder dress. It featured a beaded pinstripe design and a sweeping floor-length cape.

TYLA’S MET GALA LOOK
The ensemble paid tribute to the late fashion icon André Leon Talley, as confirmed by her stylist.

Tyla’s gown was a masterclass in blending classic elegance with contemporary artistry. The navy pinstripe and oversized shirt elements echoed Talley’s signature dandy style.

The raw embroidery and delicate crystal embellishments added a surrealist touch typical of Jacquemus.

The crisp poplin fabric and corseted silhouette revisited the refined aesthetics of traditional Black tailoring. It created a look that was both polished and strikingly original.

TYLA GOES BLONDE
Tyla debuted a daring blonde pixie cut styled by celebrity hairstylist Yusef, complementing her radiant skin tone. She also wore vintage Hollywood-inspired makeup by Pat McGrath.

The makeup artist revealed they channelled icons like Josephine Baker, Dorothy Dandridge, and Jean Harlow.

They did this to craft sultry smoky eyes with warm nudes and deep browns, paired with tonal red lips, according to Billboard.

“We played with the brow-arched, softened, and gently toned to echo a new kind of modern Hollywood,” McGrath shared.

BENEFIT HOST COMMITTEE
Tyla’s presence at the gala was more than just a fashion statement. As a Costume Institute benefit host committee member, she stood alongside luminaries such as Doechii, André 3000, and Janelle Monáe.

The event, held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, was co-chaired by Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo, and Lewis Hamilton.

LeBron James was the honorary chair, though he had to withdraw due to injury.

TYLA’S STYLE JOURNEY
Reflecting on her style journey, Tyla has often cited her South African roots and early days of creating unique looks with limited resources as key influences.

“When I was still coming up in South Africa, I didn’t have money to spend on custom looks,” she explained.

“My best friend and I used to tie and cut up clothes to make performance outfits. I loved that messiness and wanted that everywhere.”

This creative spirit shines through in her bold Met Gala look, which balances precision tailoring with artistic imperfection.

SOUTH AFRICAN PRIDE
Tyla’s rise is a source of pride for South Africa, showcasing the global impact of its talent on the world’s biggest fashion stages.

As she told Billboard recently, her career has soared since her Met Gala debut last year. The singer is preparing to release a new album that promises to mark a fresh chapter in her artistic evolution.

With her stunning Jacquemus gown and fearless style, Tyla didn’t just attend the Met Gala, she owned it.

The songstress proved once again that South African flair is a force to be reckoned with on the global fashion scene.
