Thuso Mbedu to star in ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ film adaptation

South African talent again shines as Thuso Mbedu lands the lead role in a new highly anticipated film. The film in question is an adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s best-selling novel Children of Blood and Bone.

Production is set to begin in South Africa in the coming weeks, making this a project close to home for the Emmy-nominated actress.

THUSO MBEDU’S NEW ROLE
Thuso Mbedu will play Zélie, a courageous young woman fighting to restore magic to her oppressed people, according to Variety.

The actress shared her excitement on Instagram. “To know that I can work with some of the most amazing people as we tell this great story is truly humbling. I’m so excited. I’m so grateful.”

The film promises a star-studded cast.

THE ALL-STAR CAST
British actor Tosin Cole will portray Tzain, Zélie’s protective older brother. Amandla Stenberg and Damson Idris take on the roles of Princess Amari and Prince Inan.

Chiwetel Ejiofor will play the complex King Saran, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The ensemble also boasts Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, and Regina King. King will star as the formidable Queen Nehanda.

A GRIPPING TALE
Director Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) will helm the project.

“Our incredible ensemble reflects the whole of the diaspora,” Prince-Bythewood said. “This is where our magic lies.” She added that filming in South Africa would add authenticity to the story’s African roots.

Adeyemi’s novel is a gripping tale of adventure, identity, and rebellion. It draws heavily on Nigerian culture and Yoruba mythology.

THUSO MBEDU AND AFRICAN STORIES
The story follows Zélie as she fights against an oppressive monarchy that stripped her people of their magic. Her journey is a powerful allegory of resistance and resilience, according to Geeks Of Colour.

The inclusion of African actors is a priority for the filmmakers. Adeyemi confirmed that additional casting from an open call in Nigeria would be announced soon.

This move ensures the film stays true to its African heritage. The choice of Mbedu as the lead adds another accolade to her impressive résumé.

THUSO MBEDU’S PERFORMANCES
She previously wowed audiences with her performances in The Underground Railroad and The Woman King. Her casting as Zélie cements her status as one of South Africa’s brightest stars.

South African audiences have even more reason to celebrate as filming unfolds locally. This will not only showcase the country’s breathtaking landscapes but also boost the local film industry.

SOUTH AFRICA’S FILM INDUSTRY
The global attention the project brings is bound to highlight South Africa’s growing reputation as a filmmaking hub.

Children of Blood and Bone is set for an early 2027 release, but excitement is already building.

With an all-star cast, a visionary director, and a story that resonates deeply, the film has all the makings of a blockbuster.
