Springboks captain Siya Kolisi speaks for the first time since announcing divorce

Springboks captain Siya Kolisi, the 33-year-old powerhouse flanker, took to social media for the first time since news of his divorce from Rachel Kolisi became public.

Kolisi, who has recently rejoined the Hollywoodbets Sharks, made his post just after a triumphant return to the field where he played 71 minutes in the Sharks’ United Rugby Championship match against Munster at Kings Park Stadium in Durban.

The team secured a 41-24 victory over the Irish side, marking Kolisi’s strong return to South African rugby following a stint with French team Racing 92.

Kolisi’s Return to Durban and Message of Thanks
In his post, Kolisi expressed gratitude to his supporters, writing, “Thank you so much for all the support @sharksrugby family and the people of KZN great to be back here. See you soon.”

His return to the Sharks marks a significant chapter in his career, having spent several months with Racing 92, where he was warmly welcomed but ultimately felt his commitment to the club could not be fully realized due to international obligations with the Springboks.

Kolisi’s first few games since his September return have already demonstrated his skill and energy on the field, making an immediate impact. The Springbok captain’s leadership on the field was pivotal in securing the Sharks’ latest win, underscoring his reputation as one of South Africa’s premier athletes and most respected rugby captains.

Kolisi’s Move Back from France and Reflections on His Future
Kolisi joined Racing 92 in January but recently announced his decision to part ways with the club, citing the demands of international rugby and a need to maintain his physical well-being.

In a statement last month, Kolisi explained, “When I arrived in Paris, I didn’t know what the future of my international career was, but when I started playing for the national team again (in June), I realised that my body has no rest.”

For Kolisi, balancing club commitments with international demands became a significant challenge. “Above all, if I play for South Africa, I miss three months of the Top 14 season,” he shared. Despite his high regard for Racing 92 and appreciation for the opportunities, Kolisi felt a personal conflict.

“I am very well paid, and it makes me feel like I am stealing from Racing. So, for me, my physical health and the club, I want to do what is right. I don’t want to only invest half of myself,” he admitted, demonstrating the high standards he sets for himself both on and off the field.

Kolisi’s decision to return to the Sharks was thus motivated by a desire to fully commit himself to a team while balancing his international aspirations and personal health.

As he noted, Racing 92 recruited him expecting “a full-time Siya Kolisi,” a commitment he felt he couldn’t entirely uphold due to his national responsibilities.
