Lerato Nxumalo, known for her role as Phakamile Mdletshe on e.tv’s Scandal!, bid farewell to the show on Friday, 14 June. Nxumalo, who debuted on the popular soapie on Monday, 17 April, described her experience as transformative and fulfilling.
In an interview with Sunday World, Nxumalo expressed her gratitude and joy for the opportunity to play Phakamile. “Playing Phakamile has been such a beautiful experience. I enjoyed every single moment because I feel like I grew so much. Working with the team that successfully grew me as an actor has been such an honour. Thank you so much to Ochre Media and e.tv for the growth opportunity that you guys have given me.”
She continued, “For all that you guys have done for me, I am very, very much appreciative. I wish Scandal! all the best and I’m so glad to have been a part of this amazing winning team.”

Sanele Zulu, the Series Producer of Scandal!, also shared kind words about Nxumalo’s departure. “Working with Lerato has left us craving for more. She did a fantastic job portraying Phakamile and sharing her time with us. Her talent is undeniable. We wish Nxumalo all the best for the future,” said Zulu.
During her time on the show, Nxumalo played Jojo’s (Melusi Mbele) lover and the elder sister of Nqobile (Zekhatho Zondi) and Mbuso (Siyabonga Ngcwensa).

Nxumalo first rose to fame with her role as a doctor on Durban Gen and also appeared on 1Magic’s telenovela Lingashoni. Her departure from Scandal! marks another significant step in her acting career.
More Actors Exit Scandal!
Nxumalo is the third star to leave Scandal! this season, following Melusi Mbele and Matthews Rantsoma, who portray Jojo and Nhlamulo, respectively. Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela confirmed Mbele’s departure on Friday, 14 June, noting that Jojo’s storyline will conclude on Monday, 17 June 2024. Mbele, who won a Safta (South African Film and Television Award) for his role in 2023, leaves a lasting legacy on the show.
Mathews Rantsoma, who played Nhlamulo Maseko, also announced his resignation and will exit the show on 24 July. “Matthews approached us to advise us that he would like to pursue other ventures. The production and the channel support his decision and have agreed to release him. He will exit the story at the end of July. We wish him success in his future,” reads the statement from the production team.
Scandal!’s Popularity
Despite these departures, Scandal! remains a fan favorite. The Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa’s (BRCSA) May figures reveal that the show is currently in fourth place with 3.5 million viewers, underscoring its enduring popularity and the impact of its talented cast.
