The National Prosecuting Authority issued a formal apology to Sonia Mbele after mentioning her in a statement relating to her son Donell Mbele’s legal battle.
The actress’ 23-year-old son is facing accusations of rape and appeared in court this week to face charges of two counts of rape involving an underage girl.
NPA admits fault after issuing statement
The NPA formally withdrew a statement titled ‘Renowned Actress’ Son Appears in Court for Raping His Girlfriend’ on Wednesday.
“In keeping with our core values of justice, accountability, and transparency. We acknowledge that the manner in which the statement was crafted does not align with our high standards of professionalism and integrity.” NPA statement
The authority admitted the statement reflected ‘poor judgment’ claiming that it slipped the ‘standard quality control measures’ it subjects media statements to.
Sonia Mbele formally apologised to
The National Prosecuting Authority, in light of this event, has formally apologised to Sonia Mbele and others who were affected by the mistake.
“We sincerely and unreservedly apologise for any harm or distress caused, particularly to the mother indirectly referred to in the statement, and to all members of the public in general. As the NPA, we remain committed to upholding public trust and ensuring that our communication reflects the highest ethical and professional standards.” NPA statement
Mbele released on R1000 bail
Donell Mbele was released from custody with bail set at R1000 on Monday after appearing in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court.
