His passion for performance began in his formative years at Orlando West High School in Soweto, where he was deeply involved in Youth Alive Ministries during the 1970s. His dedication led him to further hone his craft at the Wits Drama School, and he later traveled to the United States to study Theatre Directing at Columbia University. Interestingly, at the age of 56, he embraced his heritage by including his biological father’s surname, becoming known as Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha, a meaningful gesture reflecting his personal journey.

Dr. Mofokeng’s contributions to the arts have not gone unnoticed. On June 28, 2019, he was honored with an honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) degree from the University of the Free State (UFS), highlighting his academic and professional achievements. In 2013, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Acting at the 7th annual South African Film and Television Awards, marking a significant milestone in his career.

In addition to his many achievements, Dr. Mofokeng recently published his book titled “Nna Ke Monna,” which he launched on July 24, 2023, at the University of the Free State.
