‘I lived a life of hell,’ says actor Sello Maake KaNcube as he reportedly divorces Pearl Mbewe! In recent developments, renowned South African actor Sello Maake KaNcube and his wife, Pearl Mbewe, are reportedly in the process of ending their marriage.
Maake KaNcube, known for his iconic roles on Generations and in numerous South African films, has opened up about the challenges he claims to have faced in his relationship with Mbewe, leading him to seek a protection order and ultimately file for divorce.
The pair had tied the knot in a lobola ceremony in 2021 but have reportedly been living separately since mid-2023.
A Difficult Marriage: Maake KaNcube’s Perspective
Maake KaNcube told TshisaLIVE that his marriage with Mbewe has been fraught with turmoil, describing the relationship as “a life of hell.” He explained that he endured difficulties in the marriage partly out of fear of public judgment, but has reached a breaking point and no longer wishes to continue. “I tried to make this marriage work in fear that people will judge me. I’ve been dealing with so much hell in this relationship. I am done. I want to get out of that marriage,” he revealed.
The actor also shared that he believes Mbewe contributed significantly to his distress, suggesting that she manipulated his public image on social media, creating a false impression of happiness.
According to Maake KaNcube, “I have never been a problem in my marriage. My wife has been the problem. She was managing the social media. I was presented as someone who was happily married when actually I lived a life of hell.”
Protection Order and Accusations of Jealousy
The relationship between the two has deteriorated further, leading Maake KaNcube to serve Mbewe with a protection order. On her part, Mbewe reportedly did not sign the order, stating she hadn’t read it and objecting to the process by which it was presented to her. “How do I sign for something I haven’t read? I said I’m not signing sh*t. They gave me three protection orders with wrong people’s names. Then they gave me the third one with my name,” Mbewe told the publication.

Mbewe has also made her own claims, describing her husband as “a jealous man, controlling, and a maniac,” and mentioned that she had expressed to him her need for a break. Mbewe’s statements indicate that both parties have faced significant emotional strain in the marriage.
Steps Towards Divorce
Reports of the couple’s separation initially surfaced in March, when Sunday World revealed that Maake KaNcube had approached Swanepoel van Zyl Attorneys for help in filing for divorce. Sources indicate that Mbewe contacted the same legal firm in October, aiming to finalize the divorce proceedings.
These mutual actions suggest that the two are in agreement about ending their union, a marriage that Maake KaNcube previously described as a “living nightmare.”
This marriage marks Maake KaNcube’s second attempt at a long-term relationship, following a previous union with Palesa Mboweni in 2015, which lasted only eight months.
His struggles to find lasting happiness have been public and difficult, adding a layer of personal challenge to his otherwise successful acting career.
