‘I Lied I Would Pay R5 Million’: ‘Muvhango’ Star Cynthia Shange
Legendary model and actress Cynthia Shange, known for her iconic role in the South African soap opera “Muvhango,” recently opened up about a harrowing health ordeal that nearly cost her a leg. Speaking at the Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards on July 20, Shange shared her remarkable story of survival and resilience.
The Health Scare
In 2018, Cynthia Shange faced severe health complications due to diabetes, which led to a prolonged hospital stay of three months. During this time, she was confronted with a life-altering decision when doctors advised her that her leg needed to be amputated to prevent further health deterioration.
The Lie That Saved Her
Desperate to avoid amputation, Shange devised a plan. She told her doctors that she had signed a contract for a movie role and that breaching it would result in a R5 million penalty. This fabricated story bought her time and allowed her to receive alternative treatment. She recounted, “I lied and told them I had signed a contract which I could not breach and if I were to breach it, I would have to pay R5 million. They called my daughter to come sign forms so I could get some antibiotics. My leg was getting worse by the day and after taking these antibiotics the complications got worse.”
The Road to Recovery
Despite the worsening condition of her leg, Shange persevered. She underwent four surgeries and, while she was fortunate enough not to lose her entire leg, she did lose five toes to gangrene. Reflecting on her experience, Shange expressed her gratitude for surviving such a critical period. “I could have accepted this award being accompanied by someone with a wheelchair, but I am grateful for God’s mercy. I had complications which left me hospitalised for three months. It was hard and I was in between life and death,” she said.
Celebrating a Lifetime Achievement
Cynthia Shange was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards, recognizing her significant contributions to the entertainment industry. Known for her role as MaNkosi Buthelezi, the mother of Thandaza (played by Sindi Dlathu) in “Muvhango,” Shange has also appeared in notable productions such as “Shaka Zulu,” “u’Deliwe,” “Isivumelwano,” and “Inkedama.”
A Legacy in Entertainment
At 75 years old, Cynthia Shange continues to inspire many with her resilience and dedication to her craft. Besides her illustrious career, she is also a proud mother of four: Banele, Sihle, Archie, and popular media personality Nonhle Thema.
