‘I am a child of God’: Gogo Skhotheni leaves Sangoma practice behind

Former sangoma and reality TV star Gogo Skhotheni, whose real name is Tumi Motsoeneng, has made a dramatic shift in her spiritual journey. Known for her appearances on the hit Moja Love reality series that explored the lives of traditional healers, Gogo Skhotheni has announced that she is no longer practicing as a sangoma and has distanced herself from her past involvement in traditional healing and dark practices.

Gogo Skhotheni rose to fame through her reality show, which offered an unfiltered glimpse into the world of traditional healing, spiritual callings, and ancestral rituals. Her bold personality and openness about her work, including controversial confessions of using “evil muti” and other practices associated with the dark arts, sparked both admiration and criticism from the public.

In recent years, she expanded her career beyond healing by launching a podcast and diving into the world of music as a DJ. However, her latest announcement marks the most significant turn in her personal and professional life.

Public Announcement on TikTok
On Thursday, Gogo Skhotheni took to TikTok to publicly share her decision to step away from her life as a traditional healer. In the emotional video, she said:

“I am no longer a traditional healer. I am no longer a sangoma. I am no longer practising as a sangoma. I am no longer doing consultations. I am no longer giving out isidliso. I am no longer giving out imbiza. All those things—I am no longer doing it.”

She clarified that, although she is renouncing the practice, she still holds deep respect for her cultural background and spiritual roots:

“However, I will forever acknowledge, respect, and believe in my ancestors.”

The video showed a visibly joyful and relieved Gogo Skhotheni, who declared:

“I am a child of God. This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice. I’m happy. I wish I could sing, I wish I could do so much. My heart is full.”

Hints of Doubt and Conflict
Her decision did not come out of the blue. Gogo Skhotheni first hinted at leaving ubungoma (the calling of a traditional healer) during an episode of Podcast and Chill, where she discussed her inner conflict and disillusionment with current trends in the spiritual space.

“I hate to be part of this. I want to quit so bad. I don’t want to be associated under the sangoma umbrella,” she admitted.

She clarified that her motivation to quit wasn’t due to fraudulent intent or rejection of the ancestral calling, but rather a personal transformation rooted in her strong Christian faith.

“I believe I can do it without being a sangoma. I’m a strong believer in God, and I believe in Him so much,” she said.

Facing the Consequences
When asked about the spiritual consequences of abandoning her sangoma duties, Skhotheni didn’t flinch.

“I am willing to face them. I would rather face the consequences. Before anything else, I am a child of God.”

She went on to describe the emotional and spiritual toll that the journey had taken on her.

“This journey of ubungoma… you end up doing witchcraft and other things. It’s one of the darkest journeys I’ve been on as a healer.”

A New Path Rooted in Faith
Despite her decision, Gogo Skhotheni emphasized that she still considers herself spiritually guided—just on a different path.

“Being a healer is what I chose, and it goes along with God. I am a sangoma who believes in God and puts God in everything I do. I love God, and He loves me.”

Her declaration signals a major turning point in her life and has sparked both praise and curiosity among followers and the broader spiritual community. As she steps into this new chapter, Gogo Skhotheni appears ready to leave the shadows behind and embrace a future anchored in faith and purpose.
