In recent years, many South African media personalities have answered their callings to become traditional healers. The influx of sangoma — or “gogos” — has been a huge talking point for many locals who have had many concerns. Stars like Boity Thulo, Zodwa Wabantu, and Phelo Bala are among those who announced they are transitioning to healers.
Lately, however, several of these stars are also announcing their decision to become born-again Christians. Last year, Somizi Mhlongo’s “baby momma” Palesa Madisakwane announced that she was turning her back on traditional healing.
This year, famous healer Gogo Skhotheni shared that she is now born again and has decided to “put God first.” She didn’t, however, denounce her calling.
MORE SA STARS TURN TO GOD
Tumi Motsoeneng, popularly known as Gogo Skhotheni, is one of quite a few local stars who have decided to reclaim their christianity this year.
The reality TV star and podcaster joins stars like Boity Thulo, Cassper Nyovest and Black Coffee who have all revealed that they decided to get closer to God this year.
Skhotheni’s revelation comes after former Idols SA judge Somizi Mhlongo’s ex Palesa Madisakwane decided to burn her tradional healing attire and turn to God.
In 2023, Madisakwane shared a video of herself burning her ancestrol cloth. In her caption she wrote how there is “there is power in the name of Jesus to break every chain.”
Her decision was met with a lot of controversy from social media users who questioned how it was so easy to “resign” from being a sangoma.

Taking to Instagram, Skhotheni shared how great it feels to be “born again.”
“It feels good to be born again. God today, tomorrow, and forever. He’s my saviour, my father, and protector; God first before anything,” she wrote according to a Fakaza News article.
She also added that was still a tradional healer and still has her gift.
“Yet my gift remains: I am a child of God,” she wrote earnestly.
Just days earlier, Boity Thulo, who answered her calling in 2018, shared that she made the decision to attend a church service following a seven-year hiatus.
“Going to church tomorrow, voluntarily for the first time in 7 years (here’s a space for those who are going to judge me…please spill freely)..to the rest, what should I wear?” Boity posted.
