This milestone is not just a personal achievement for Dr. Motaung and his family, but a significant moment in the history of South African and African football as a whole, and a testament to his unwavering commitment to the sport, passion for people and community development.
“Born on 16 October 1944, in the vibrant township of Orlando in Soweto, Dr. Motaung’s journey began in humble surroundings. He is the fifth child of the late Ceyland and Mapontśo Motaung who, in total, had 10 children.
“As a passionate young footballer, he started playing in the streets of Phefeni in Soweto. His talent was noticed in school as a teenager and he quickly rose through the ranks, showcasing his incredible talent and leadership skills and signing for Orlando Pirates at the age of 16.
“His love for the game drove him to explore opportunities beyond our borders, leading him to the United States, where he played for Atlanta Chiefs. This experience not only honed his skills but also ignited a vision that would ultimately change the face of South African football forever.
“In 1969, ‘Chincha Guluva’ as Dr. Motaung is affectionately known, returned to South Africa, determined to create a football club that would not only harness local talent but also unite fans from all walks of life. Thus, Kaizer Chiefs was born on 7 January 1970. Under his guidance, the Club has grown into the most successful and beloved team in the country, boasting numerous trophies and a rich legacy that transcends generations.
“Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Motaung has not only been a visionary leader but also an advocate for the development of the sport in South Africa. His tireless efforts have paved the way for young talent to shine, ensuring that the game continues to thrive. The establishment of the Club’s youth development academy is just one example of his foresight and dedication to nurturing the next generation of footballers for South African fans to enjoy.
“Beyond the football pitch, Dr. Motaung has made significant contributions to the community, using his platform to inspire change and uplift those in need through various outreach programmes over the years. He has been a beacon of hope for many, demonstrating that football is more than just a game – it is a force for good.
