South African Gqom artist and performer Babes Wodumo, born Bongekile Simelane, is set to face legal proceedings in Durban this week. The trial, which has captured public attention, stems from assault charges filed by local designer Philly Mhlongo of SK Dee Designs in February 2024.
### Legal Troubles for the Gqom Star
Babes Wodumo, widely known for her hit track *Wololo*, will appear in court from Tuesday, January 14, 2025, to Thursday, January 16, 2025. The charges against her arose after a confrontation at Mhlongo’s shop escalated into a physical altercation. According to reports, the incident was triggered by a dispute involving Babes Wodumo’s dancers.
Mhlongo explained that the issue began when the dancers attempted to rent clothes for a gig on February 28, 2024. They lacked sufficient funds to make the rental payment, and Mhlongo insisted on upfront payment. The arrangement was for the dancers to return the garments the following day, but they only returned them on March 12, in damaged condition.
“When they came back, they were accompanied by Babes Wodumo, her bodyguard, and her father. They seemed intoxicated, and Babes assaulted me,” Mhlongo stated.
