Best Bok ever? Why Mzansi loves Eben ‘Elizabedi’ Etzebeth

Eben Etzebeth – fondly referred to as “Elizabedi” – will be celebrating his 128th test match appearance this weekend, making him the most-capped Springbok in the history of the squad.

And Mzansi is celebrating along with the towering star, who has become a firm favourite among rugby fans.

MOST CAPPED PLAYER IN HISTORY
Eben Etzebeth will make history this weekend when he makes his 128th test appearance for the Springboks. This means that the lock is the most-capped player in the history of the team.

Eben surpasses former Boks Victor Matfield and Bryan Habana, who boast 127 and 124 caps, respectively.

WHY MZANSI LOVES EBEN ETZEBETH
Apart from being a world-class player, Eben Etzebeth is a firm fan favourite.

Here’s why…

He leaves his heart on the pitch

Like other Springboks, Eben puts blood, sweat, and tears – literally – into every game he plays.

In a test match against Ireland in Durban, a bleeding Eben continued to play despite suffering a nasty head injury, which was held together by gauze and tape.

He laughs in the face of his opposition

Eben – who is known for his short fuse – is known for activating “beast mode” during his games. He’s taken on multiple players in brawls on the pitch – all while laughing and smiling.

He always makes time for his fans

Whether it’s in public or on the side of the pitch, Eben graciously greets fans with a smile.

He can sing and dance

Although his dance moves are questionable, Eben serves a stellar ululation. He’s even been named an honorable member of the Gwigo Squad.

He’s a big softie

Eben may look intimidating to his foes and have a family history of professional wrestlers, but his affection for his family, friends, and teammates reveals another version of the star.
