‘Amakhosi for life’: Khune responds to ‘traitor’ criticism

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has responded to criticism from fans who accused him of being a “traitor” after he attended an Orlando Pirates match over the weekend.

The retired captain and his wife, Sphelele, were spotted at Soweto Stadium, where the Buccaneers beat Baroka 3-1.

KHUNE RESPONDS TO ORLANDO PIRATES’ CRITICISM
In an Instagram post, Itu Khune and his wife Sphelele posted pictures of themselves watching an Orlando Pirates match live in action.

The couple – who wore black, seemingly in support of Pirates – were spectators at the Soweto Stadium.

However, the former Kaizer Chiefs captain was accused of supporting the club’s biggest rivals.

An amused Khune responded to the backlash, claiming that he was at the game for “work” purposes.

When asked if he supported the Buccaneers, he responded, “Amakhosi for life.” Another accused him of being a “traitor,” while a third claimed the former soccer star was likely “confused.”

Khune’s wife, Sphelele also laughed off the comments from angry fans. While she claimed she was a “KC Girl,” she did concede that the rivals “play good football.”

WHAT IS HE UP TO NOW?
On his Instagram account, Itumeleng Khune has been giving his followers a look at his next chapter, away from Kaizer Chiefs. This includes working as a health and safety officer and owning shares in a sports betting agency.

Last year, the 37-year-old unofficially resigned from his post at Kaizer Chiefs after 20 long years. According to reports, Khune left after his contract for the 2024/2025 season was not renewed.

A month earlier, the club honoured the soccer star for his total of 25 years of service, including his time at the youth academy.
